PLANT OPERATOR (SPECIALIZING IN: EXCAVATOR, GRADER & TRANSPORTER TRUCK)

Position Summary

The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient transport and operation of heavy plant and equipment, including excavators, graders, and transporter trucks, to support civil construction and infrastructure projects. The role requires a high level of skill, safety awareness, and teamwork to ensure works are completed to specification, on schedule, and in compliance with all safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Plant & Equipment Operation

  • Operate excavators, graders, and transporter trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Transportation of equipment to and from sites, using a Tractor unit and large transporter trailer.
  • Perform earthworks such as excavation, trenching, grading, loading, hauling, and material placement.
  • Follow project plans, drawings, and supervisor instructions accurately.
  • Maintain precise levels and alignments where required.

2. Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with all Work Health & Safety (WHS) policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Conduct pre-start checks and ensure plant is safe to operate.
  • Identify and report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

3. Plant Care & Maintenance

  • Carry out daily inspections, basic servicing, and cleaning of equipment.
  • Identify mechanical issues and report faults to supervisors or maintenance teams.
  • Ensure equipment logbooks and pre-start documentation are completed accurately.

4. Site Support & Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, engineers, and other site personnel.
  • Assist with general site duties when required.
  • Follow traffic management plans and coordinate with other operators and spotters.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards on site.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proven ability to operate excavators, graders, and transporter trucks.
  • Strong understanding of civil construction activities and earthworks.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to work safely under pressure and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in remote or challenging site conditions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid licences for excavator, grader, and transporter truck.
  • Relevant heavy vehicle licence (required for transporter truck).
  • Minimum 2–5 years’ experience in a similar role on civil or infrastructure projects (preferred).
  • First Aid certificate (desirable).

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to work long hours, including weekends if required.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in outdoor environments.
  • Able to work in varying weather and site conditions.

  • Experience on large-scale infrastructure or road projects.
  • Strong safety record and attention to detail.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a positive work attitude.
  • Willingness to upskill and operate additional plant as required.
