Laboratory Technician Junior

Job Description

The Junior Laboratory Technician will support daily laboratory operations, especially microbiological testing, sample preparation, quality control, data recording, cleaning, and general laboratory assistance. All under supervision of our lab team.

The position is suitable for someone at the beginning of their laboratory career, provided they are reliable, careful, willing to learn, and able to follow procedures strictly.

• Assist with microbiological analysis of water, environmental, food and other samples.

• Prepare culture media, reagents, sterile materials and laboratory consumables.

• Assist with filtration, plating, incubation, colony counting and result recording.

• Help with testing for microbiological indicators such as total coliforms, E. coli, enterococci and other relevant parameters.

• Follow laboratory procedures, hygiene rules and biosafety practices.

• Clean, disinfect and maintain benches, equipment, incubators, glassware and work areas.

• Receive, label and register samples correctly.

• Assist with sample preparation for chemical, physical and material testing.

• Support water quality, environmental and industrial testing activities.

• Record results clearly and accurately in laboratory worksheets or digital systems.

• Assist with quality control checks, blanks, duplicates and internal controls.

• Help maintain stock of reagents, consumables and laboratory supplies.

• Support field sampling when required.

• Work under the supervision of senior staff and progressively take more responsibility.

Selection Criteria

Bachelor’s degree in Science or any other relevant field,

or diploma in Laboratory Technology with 2 years relevant experience in working in a teaching laboratory, with knowledge of OHS and emergency evacuation procedures

or completion of a post-trades certificate or advanced certificate and 5 years of relevant experience

or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training

Serious, honest, punctual and reliable.

Careful with details and able to follow instructions exactly.

Interested in science, laboratory work and microbiology.

Willing to learn and improve over time.

Clean, organised and disciplined in the workplace.

Able to write results clearly and keep proper records.

Able to work as part of a small professional team.
