Shipyard Equipment Operator

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Operate equipment such as forklifts, winches, air compressors, hydraulic jacks, and other machinery used

in ship launching and retrieval.

Prepare and maintain slipways, including cleaning, leveling, and positioning cribbing, tracks, and supports.

Handle and position marine airbags for launching and drydocking operations according to procedural and

engineering guidelines.

Monitor inflation and deflation processes of airbags, ensuring proper pressure and placement to prevent

vessel or equipment damage.

Assist in the setup and teardown of rigging, slings, and block arrangements for vessel movements.

Conduct routine inspection and maintenance of equipment, tools, and airbags to ensure operational

readiness.

Follow all safety procedures and participate in risk assessments and toolbox talks before starting tasks.

Communicate effectively with supervisors, signalmen, and team members to coordinate vessel

movement.

Record operational data, including airbag serial numbers, pressure readings, and slipway conditions.

Support yard operations with general labor tasks as needed during non-launch periods.

Selection Criteria

Qualifications

Completion of High School or Vocational/Technical Training related to mechanics, marine operations, or

equipment handling.

Certification or formal training in Forklift Operation, Rigging, or Heavy Equipment Use is an advantage.

Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and pressure tools is a plus.

Safety certifications such as Basic Safety Training (BST) or Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) are favorable.
