Job Description
500-Ton Ship Captain
Responsible for the safe navigation and overall operation of a vessel up to 500 gross tons. Oversees the crew, ensures compliance with maritime laws and safety regulations, plans voyages, monitors weather and sea conditions, maintains ship documentation, and ensures the safe transport of passengers and/or cargo. Conducts emergency drills, manages vessel maintenance, communicates with port authorities, and promotes efficient and professional vessel operations at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
* Safely navigate and operate the vessel.
* Supervise and lead the ship’s crew.
* Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations.
* Maintain navigation, safety, and operational records.
* Coordinate loading, unloading, and voyage planning.
* Perform safety inspections and emergency preparedness.
* Communicate with port authorities and relevant stakeholders.
* Ensure the vessel is properly maintained and seaworthy.

Selection Criteria
* Hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Master Class 5 (500 GT) or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA).
* Hold a valid Seafarer’s Medical Certificate.
* Possess current STCW Basic Safety Training certificates (or equivalent as required by VMSA).
* Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience as Master or Chief Officer on domestic commercial vessels.
* Demonstrated knowledge of Vanuatu coastal and inter-island navigation.
* Sound understanding of Vanuatu maritime legislation, safety management systems, and marine pollution prevention requirements.
* Strong leadership, decision-making, and crew management skills.
* Ability to plan and execute safe voyages while monitoring weather and sea conditions.
* Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
* Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and implement emergency procedures.
* Good mechanical awareness and the ability to identify and report vessel defects.
* A valid Vanuatu driver’s licence is desirable (if required for operational duties).
* Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, public holidays, and extended voyages.
