Background
The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) was established by Act No. 34 of 2019. Located in Port Vila, its mission is to promote higher education and lifelong learning through academic and professional excellence, through training, teaching and learning in English and French, research and international cooperation.
The existing Bachelor of Tourism & Hospitality, delivered at NUV in partnership with the University of New Caledonia, the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès and Taylor’s University of Malaysia since 2018, has laid the groundwork for academic training in the field. However, evolving economic, changing environmental contexts, and policy development called for a locally designed, homegrown Bachelor of Sustainable Tourism that will better align with Vanuatu’s realities and leverages its unique cultural and ecological assets.
Purpose of the position
Coordinate the introduction of the new Bachelor, develop and deliver courses, teach, and conduct research in the field of Sustainable Tourism.
Position Summary
The National University of Vanuatu is seeking an experienced and dynamic academic to join our team as a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Tourism. This is a leadership focused role for an established scholar and educator who is looking for a new challenge. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction for and coordinate our sustainable tourism degree that launches in 2027, while also contributing to teaching, research and external engagement activities.
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the ongoing development of our Bachelor of Sustainable Tourism, ensuring the program remains innovative, stakeholder-relevant, and aligned with contemporary sustainability challenges.
Expertise in sustainable tourism development and management within coastal and island destinations, or other environmentally and socially sensitive tourism contexts would be highly valued.
The role combines academic leadership, program management, curriculum innovation, teaching excellence, and research development. The workload allocation for this position is 40-50% teaching, 30-40% research, 15% Service /administration and 5% engagement and outreach. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues, students, industry partners, and other external stakeholders to strengthen the profile and impact of sustainable tourism education within NUV and beyond.
